What to wear?
You are welcome to bring up to three outfits for your children to wear.  However, if you are only planning to purchase 24 proofs, please limit clothing changes to two outfits.  Keep in mind, clothing changes often bring tears and frustration to both the child and the parent.  Remember to keep the clothing simple, trendy details often make the image look dated and could distract the viewer.

Newborns and Infants:  Since your child will never be this tiny again, this is the perfect time to capture all of his or her cute details their physique as to offer.  Therefore, the majority of my newborn work is done unclothed, with a diaper and a tight-fitting light onesie.  You may also consider bringing a favorite blanket to have them photographed in.
Parents, I will also use you as a backdrop as you hold your baby.  If you could bring a plain black shirt for dads and a plain white shirt for moms it would be helpful.  (Don’t stress out if you do not have these items, I have some for you to borrow if needed.)

Babies:  Soft pastels look beautiful on newborns.  Baby bonnets and infant caps are just adorable too. Do not stress out about shoes, I often will ask to remove them so we see your child’s cute feet versus the soles of their shoes.

Toddlers and older kids:  Vibrant colors will add impact to your photo.  While soft colors will give a soothing look.

Group shots:
Dress them alike:  Clothes of the same look and color will give your group shot unity.  The dominant color or hue will also grab the viewer’s attention.  The color you choose will also convey an emotion to the scene. For example, denim blue gives a portrait calm, casual formality, while bright colors, like red or yellow, will show high energy.”  Some favorite choices are khaki or denim pants with white tops or with another color like red, yellow or blue. Or dress them differently! You could try giving each person a different color to wear.  However, keep the colors with in the same hue, for example, all pastels or all bright colors.

Parents, if you will be photographed with your children, keep in mind that white shirts tend to add weight to an adult face.  (The white reflects light under your chin, therefore loosing your natural shadow.)  Also note how long your shirt sleeves and pant legs are.  Where ever the end point is will highlight that part of your body, (i.e., a short sleeve shirt will pull the viewers eye to your biceps and short shorts will focus on the thighs.)

Dressing for black and white photos:
The first thing I want you to notice in your child’s photo is their face. Therefore, you need to try to choose clothing that will not distract the viewer.  For example, if there is a big design, or the word across your child’s chest, this will be the first thing you see in a black and white photo.  I know it is tough to find boy’s clothing that does not advertise something or have big designs on it, therefore, look for solid color polo shirts or T-shirts or simple sweaters.

Avoid complex prints and designs as well as bold strips.  Any fabric with a texture looks great in black and white, i.e., seersucker, jeans, sweaters or linen. Keep in mind that some colors like hot pink, dark green or blue will turn black when photographed with black and white film.  All pastels will turn shades of gray, and of course white will stay white.

What to wear for fall photographs

The options are endless when dressing for a fall portrait. Sweaters, jackets, dark denim jeans and cords, skirt with tights are all the stuff that says welcome to fall!   A simple rule is to try to stick with colors that you would find during the autumn season.

The following are some examples of what colors look great with the Indiana scenery:  brown, tan, red, burgundy, orange, rust, gold, bright yellow, navy, black, dark purple, dark green and sage.

What to avoid:
Stay away from pastel colors (with the exception of sage).  Also avoid white shirts and white collars. White often washes out the subject and tends to add weight to an adult face.  (The white reflects light under your chin, therefore loosing your natural shadow.)   Avoid white sneakers and white socks too.  Darker shoes will be less noticeable in the fallen leaves.
